Description

We are seeking an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our growing multidisciplinary team at Optimal Healthcare in Grand Cayman.

You will deliver comprehensive gastroenterology and hepatology care in our purpose-designed, state-of-the-art 8,000 sq ft clinic, working closely with colleagues inside and outside of Optimal, across medicine, surgery, imaging, and primary care. We are building a highly patient-centred service that combines clinical excellence, technology support and innovation adoption to provide best-in-class care.

The role will allow you appropriate time to manage each patient properly, with a typical appointment time of 30 minutes (if you have worked in the NHS, you’ll understand truly what that means) but you may schedule whatever you feel appropriate. You will be supported by high calibre nursing staff, state-of-the-art equipment, lab services, and IT support including AI-generated medical notes if you wish.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert gastroenterology assessment, diagnosis, and management for acute and chronic gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions.

  • Ideally, be able to perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (upper and lower GI) in a well-supported environment.

  • Ideally be able to address both adult and paediatric GI complaints.

  • Engage in the growing possibilities coming from microbiome research to develop health transformation for patients.
  • Collaborate in multidisciplinary pathways that ensure safe, timely, and joined-up patient care.

  • Demonstrate the highest level of commitment to primary prevention, screening, and early identification.

  • Inspire patients and the public to take their digestive health seriously and positively engage in their own wellbeing.

  • Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, service development, and innovation adoption.

  • Support learning, case review, and knowledge sharing within the wider team and community.

  • Stay up to date on gastroenterology and technology developments.

  • Deliver healthcare that you are utterly proud of and that fires you up every morning.

What Makes Optimal Special?

Besides a commitment to serving the patient and their health first and foremost, Optimal provides a professional environment driven by a unique set of principles and attitudes, including:

  • Commitment to the very best terms & conditions but without ever creating a conflict of interest between patient interest and clinic business interests. Consistent with this principle, we do not incentivise by share of billing.

  • Professional and collegiate environment that truly respects each and every individual, creating a culture in which coming to work is a pleasure.

  • We are an organisation truly driven by our values, inside and out — Health, Wellbeing, Integrity, Compassion, Passion & Humility, applied to staff and patients alike.

  • Deep commitment to the Cayman Islands, its health system and healthcare sustainability, including genuine stewardship of healthcare consumption and cost.

Qualifications

  • Medical degree from an accredited institution and current licensure* to practice as a Gastroenterologist.
(*We are able to recruit professionals fully trained — e.g. CCT — and licensed in at least one of 7 accepted jurisdictions: United Kingdom, United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, or Jamaica.)

  • At least 5 years’ experience at consultant level.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to inspire and motivate individuals & families toward healthier lifestyles.

  • Proficient in using electronic health records (EHR) and other healthcare technologies.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a diverse patient caseload.

Position Terms & Conditions

  • Basic salary up to $180,000 Cayman Islands Dollars per annum

  • Additional incentive scheme (to be disclosed in personal discussions)

  • 50% contributory, 50% non-contributory Health Insurance (mandatory by law)

  • 50% contributory, 50% non-contributory Pension, based on a capped maximum (mandatory by law)

  • 5 days paid study leave (excludes costs)

  • 12 Public Holidays per annum

  • Vacation leave (to be disclosed in personal discussions)

  • Flexible working arrangements (to be disclosed in personal discussions)

Note: The incentive scheme is NOT based on billing value. We want zero conflict of interest with the best interests of the patient, first and foremost. Let’s just say it’s a “healthy” alternative — and likely more rewarding!
